By keeping the environment under review, the UN Environment aims to link science with policy making and foster sustainable development. The ‘Environment under Review’ subprogramme focuses on achieving results in the following areas:

  • Environmental assessment where the UN Environment facilitates global, regional and national policy making based on sound science and environmental information made available on open platforms
  • Early warning on emerging issues to ensure early identification and policy consideration of environmental issues that may affect our ability to achieve sustainable development
  • Information management to enhance the capacity of countries to generate, access, analyze, use and communicate environmental information and knowledge and track progress towards sustainable development goals (SDGs)

The UN Environment works closely with a large number of partners and collaborating centres in all regions of the world and has established functional networks for data, information, assessments and capacity development.

UN Environment’s flagship assessment, the sixth Global Environment Outlook (GEO-6), sets the stage for implementation of the United Nations 2030 Development Agenda and will help shape national, regional, and global responses to the Sustainable Development Goals and their environmental dimension.
