Event description: There is a growing recognition globally that the issue of marine litter and microplastics is a large and complex environmental problem that requires stronger international commitments and actions with a broad set of different measures from source to sea. While the problem is global, the high-level event will also focus on that sources, pathways and effective and realistic measures to reduce marine litter can differ significantly locally, nationally and regionally. Forward-looking and solution oriented, this event will further focus on sound waste management and waste prevention as important measures. A number of good initiatives and efforts are in place. The objective of the event is to underline the sense of urgency to act and to bring the discussion on measures to combat marine litter forward, by sharing experiences and showcase examples of measures, partnerships or initiatives from different stakeholders etc. . It will also include presentation of voluntary commitments made at the UN Ocean Conference, in relation to SDG target 14.1.
This event will bring together Ministers from host and partner countries, as well as high-level representatives from the UN system, civil society, private sector and stakeholders.
